Young German rider trumps the world’s best

Eighteen-year-old Angelina Herröder was ecstatic after beating a strong field of world class show jumping talent in the opening Global Champions Tour CSI5* in Wiesbaden.

The local youngster from nearby Frankfurt clinched victory on Pico’s Boy in 66.21 ahead of top French rider Simon Delestre on Valentino Velvet, who finished second in 69.36 at the new GCT venue on the banks of the Rhine in southern Germany.

After her lap of honour she said: “Normally Pico’s Boy is not so fast but today he was fantastic. I am so happy with this result.”

Leading Saudi rider Kamal Bahamdan jumped clear on Noblesse de Tess and finished third on 70.50. US riders Kirsten Coe and Lauren Hough were also clear along with Nicolas Pizarro from Mexico.

Many of the top riders took advantage of the early 1.45m class to limber up for the Grand Prix highlight tomorrow. The opening 5* class showed many of the top horses in strong form and looking fresh ahead of the big event tomorrow.

Tickets for tomorrow’s Grand Prix are already sold out and tens of thousands of show jumping fans will be streaming into the stunning Schlosspark venue to catch the world’s top riders in action at the Global Champions Tour in this Olympic year.
